AI That Transforms the DMV Experience
Challenge
Motor vehicle departments are under increasing pressure to reduce call volumes, decrease wait times, and improve digital access to services and resources — all without increasing staff.
Yet high-volume, repetitive inquiries like paying tickets and renewing registrations often consume call center resources during motor vehicle department business hours, resulting in limited access for residents seeking information and support. Meanwhile, language barriers can limit self-service options for non-English speakers.
Solution
To expand 24/7 and multilingual access to motor vehicle and driver services support, and to better serve drivers with the right digital services — without increased call volume or additional staffing — three states deployed Tyler Technologies’ Resident AI Assistant.
Results
With Tyler’s Resident AI Assistant, motor vehicle departments in Nebraska, South Carolina, and Mississippi were able to expand access to motor vehicle and driver services, reduce call volume and wait times, and provide services to residents within the quick timelines they expect.
In Nebraska, more than 38,000 residents used the chatbot within the first three months of deployment, generating 88,000+ inquiries — an average of nearly 1,000 questions per day. During that time, residents engaged with the system in 50 different languages, and nearly 19% of all questions were submitted between midnight and 6:00 a.m., extending service availability without increasing workforce requirements. In addition, Nebraska’s Driver and License Services (DLS) experienced a 20% reduction in call volume during each of the first two months.
Similar results have been seen in both South Carolina and Mississippi, where more than one-third of conversations with a statewide Resident AI Assistant relate to motor vehicle and driver services. Feedback from users is overwhelmingly positive, indicating high satisfaction with the Resident AI Assistant solution.
Conclusion
The ability to centralize and scale service delivery without increasing staff is not only cost-effective — it also provides a better DMV experience for all stakeholders involved.
Both motor vehicle departments and drivers deserve customer service solutions that improve their experiences. Leveraging the Resident AI Assistant enables motor vehicle departments to reduce repetitive workload for motor vehicle department staff, relieve high call volumes and foot traffic, and drive resident engagement with digital services. Meanwhile, residents enjoy expanded 24/7 access, faster service delivery, and improved satisfaction with motor vehicle department interactions.
Motor vehicle departments are not the only agencies that can benefit from leveraging the Resident AI Assistant: deploying this solution at the statewide level can create a unified, AI-powered experience that provides one united front of government services, streamlines digital service delivery, and drives resident engagement across the board.
