Key Takeaways From National League of Cities 2023 Conference

The National League of Cities (NLC) 2023 annual conference was the largest gathering on record with more than 4,100 attendees. City leaders and their private sector partners addressed a variety of pressing issues. Tyler Technologies, an NLC Capstone Partner, was on-site to capture these key takeaways.

Takeaway 1: Engaging residents requires considering their diverse abilities, comfort levels, and access to technology. Cities need to take steps to scale technology solutions to reach all residents.

In the “Transforming Digital Government Experiences” session, Cate Ryba, Tyler’s director of My Civic, explored the importance of mobile applications in better serving residents. She shared a case study from El Cajon, California. There, the city used their mobile application to sponsor a “pothole challenge.” The app allowed residents to easily identify potholes, enabling the city to fill a year's worth of potholes in just five days.

After the presentation, attendees discussed the challenges of reaching populations such as senior citizens and the unhoused who have difficulty accessing technology. The city representatives in the room shared their experiences and all agreed that digital government has to be made accessible to all residents.

Takeaway 2: Cities are moving toward advanced, proactive defenses against increasing cyberattacks.

Cybersecurity is a top concern for NLC members and has been for many years now. But with the rise of AI-weaponized attacks, cities are more focused on defending their systems and the data generated from them. City leaders discussed how the combination of cloud applications and services such as managed detection and response can proactively build a robust defense against attacks. Organizations are more secure and resilient with solutions in the cloud, such as Tyler’s AWS-powered solutions, than they would be waiting for the next update for on-premises software.

Takeaway 3: Technology partnerships, whether public-private or peer-to-peer, enable cities to take advantage of a wider array of resources, expertise, and innovative solutions to complex challenges.

The National League of Cities creates opportunities for peer-to-peer sharing and for private sector collaboration to find lasting solutions. Tyler is proud to support the National League of Cities as a Capstone Partner. Tyler has a long-standing relationship with the group in order to continue our mission of empowering people who serve the public.
