We are looking for a Director, Software Engineering to lead our technical and engineering efforts to enable us to continue to lead in this space. The mission is to ensure the platform can support ever increasing size and complexity from our government partners and continue to deliver the features to enable our clients to address the most pressing problems of our time.

Responsibilities

  • As a Director of Engineering, you will provide the direction, support, and leadership to enable a team of managers and technical leads to build scalable, distributed computing systems in our core service offering. You are obsessed with creating high-functioning, highly engaged and motivated teams.
  • You are actively involved in hiring the best employees. Supported by peers in product, UX and engineering leadership, you will define KPIs, goals, and your team’s vision as a foundation of the broader mission. You must be data-driven, both to have an impact in our data-centric business and to be effective at managing the metric-driven aspects of an agile development cycle.
  • You will work with team leads to define and execute on our long-term architectural direction. You are expected to keep abreast of trends within the industry, identifying those that will allow us to continue to lead our clients. You are expected to balance the short-term and long-term product needs with both technical debt, and areas of strategic investment.
  • You set the example for cross-functional leadership, working across your team boundaries within engineering and outside of it to ensure the delivery of highly impactful products to our clients. You have exceptionally strong communication skills and can simplify tough technical concepts so that those with a non-technical background outside of engineering (and outside of the company) can understand them. You are also working to create a positive public presence for us, attending talks, meetups, etc. to ensure that we continue to develop an amazing roster of talented engineers.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years managing software development teams
  • Experience managing, mentoring, and recruiting team leads and managers
  • Ability to translate company vision and strategy into meaningful work for technical teams and to understand and plan what is needed from a technical architecture perspective to deliver against the vision
  • Ability to represent engineering priorities to non-technical audiences, including reduction of tech debt and investments needed to increase technical velocity
  • Ability to ensure that technical decisions are made in a timely manner and are aligned with the architectural vision for the platform
  • Strong track record of shipping scalable, reliable, client facing software
  • Experience in owning all aspects of a system lifecycle, from proper design, testing, deployment, metrics and monitoring
  • Passion for our mission to improve the world through empowering our government clients

  • Experience managing engineering managers
  • Experience with AWS and making appropriate build vs buy decisions
  • Demonstrated excellence working with database technologies including RDBMS and NoSQL stores and understanding their tradeoffs
  • Comfortable working in a heterogeneous development environment where you’ll be working with multiple development languages and technologies
  • Eager to take on new challenges and opportunities in a rapidly growing environment

State Specific Salary Range Disclosure Requirements for Colorado, Connecticut, and Nevada

Salary will generally fall between $175,000 - $200,000 before adjustment for geographic differences. Recruiter can confirm if position is incentive eligible.

Tyler is subject to regulations, guidelines, and/or client requirements relating to the qualifications of Tyler personnel performing certain client work. Because of the nature of this position, it is a requirement that the candidate can successfully pass a federal background check at the time an offer is extended and over the course of employment with Tyler.
