Software Development Engineer in Test
When you are an SDET at Tyler Technologies, providing Socrata solutions, you are a vital part of the team building products that can make a difference in our world. Engineers who love release management to the core of their being, can create test automation, and never shy away from manual testing are champions to us. This work requires you to understand our products and our people. Applying great pragmatism and deep organization, you dive in, test, review, re-test, discuss, challenge the status quo, smile, document what you have done, and do it all again.
Work with our transformative data solutions that help agencies address mission-critical outcomes. Our cloud-based data platform, open data solutions, and performance management solutions help agencies improve performance, transparency, and public engagement.
More than anything, to be great as our next SDET, you need to…
...have great people skills. This means you can get up off your seat and TALK to people (this may seem trivial, but it’s really important). You are also great at collaborating with tools like Slack and you can write well and communicate your thoughts clearly and with an understanding of your audience.
...use all of your talents to ensure we build the thing we said we were going to build.
...apply rigorous thinking to make sure that the thing we said we were going to build is something the customer can actually use.
...care about the work you are doing and the health of the product you are working on - there is no substitute for this. This is about devotion to great products. This is a deeply important part of our work.
...have a thorough understanding of our products from a user perspective. You can put yourself in the user’s chair and experience our products like them; this is vital for user acceptance testing.
...be comfortable hunting down your own requirements if/when they aren’t handed to you. Don’t wait to be given everything; innovate, like the amazing engineer you are!
This position is about performing “black box” testing, release management, manual testing, filing awesome bug reports, as well as coding to write automated tests.
On a purely technical level, here is the ubiquitous list...we try and keep it clear and not ridiculously long and exhausting to read. You should be familiar with, or at least have a willingness to learn:

- SQL and/or No-SQL
- Proficient in at least one programming language (Ruby/Python is a bonus)
- Bash/comfortable on a Unix command line
- Familiarity with CI tools (we happen to use Jenkins)
- HTTP protocol and familiarity with REST APIs (and clients for testing ie: cURL or Postman)
- Performance/load testing
- Grey box, white box testing
- JS browser console
- Test methodologies
- Comfortable writing test plans and doing a certain amount of manual testing
